What this page covers

This Cookie Policy explains what cookies and similar storage technologies English Focus Daily uses, why, and how you can control them. It supplements our Privacy Policy.

What are cookies?

Cookies are small text files saved on your device when you visit a website. They let the site remember things between visits (like your settings) or measure usage. “Similar technologies” includes local storage and session storage โ€” these store data in your browser but are not sent back to the server with each request.

Cookies and storage we use

Strictly necessary

These are required for the site to function. You can’t disable them in our settings (you can still block them in your browser, but the site may not work correctly).

  • WordPress session โ€” keeps you logged in if you’re an editor. Expires when you close the browser or log out.
  • Cookie-consent state โ€” remembers whether you accepted or dismissed the cookie banner.

Analytics

We use Google Analytics 4 to understand which lessons learners find useful and where the site falls short.

  • _ga โ€” distinguishes anonymous users. Expires after 13 months.
  • _ga_<container-id> โ€” persists session state for GA4. Expires after 13 months.

You can opt out with the Google Analytics Opt-out Browser Add-on.

Advertising

We use Google AdSense to fund the site. Google may set cookies to show relevant ads and prevent the same ad showing too many times.

  • __gads, __gpi, NID โ€” Google advertising and personalisation.

Manage your ad preferences at adssettings.google.com.

Local storage (not cookies)

To make learning feel rewarding without a login, we store a few things in your browser’s localStorage. This data stays on your device โ€” it does not get sent to our server.

  • efd_xp โ€” your earned XP points.
  • efd_streak_dates โ€” dates you visited or completed a quiz.
  • efd_lessons_completed โ€” count of lessons you’ve finished.
  • efd_saved_words โ€” words you bookmarked.
  • efd_newsletter_pending โ€” newsletter email queue (cleared once submitted server-side).

To clear this data, open your browser’s developer tools โ†’ Application โ†’ Local Storage โ†’ clear, or use your browser’s “Clear browsing data” feature.

How to control cookies

You can:

  • Use the cookie banner on your first visit to accept or reject non-essential categories.
  • Clear cookies in your browser settings at any time.
  • Use private/incognito browsing for a session that leaves no cookies behind.
  • Install a browser extension (like Privacy Badger or uBlock Origin) for granular control.

Changes to this policy

We may update this policy if we change the cookies we use. The “Last updated” date at the top of the Privacy Policy covers cookie changes too.
